It is now Wednesday and we are already half way the first week! It has gone both quickly and yet not. I am based in a fairly small school in Godella which is a little town outside of Valencia. The teachers are absolutely lovely and have made me feel so welcome. They really appreciate the fact I speak Spanish and I am loving having the opportunity to use it so much with them. The pupils of course have no idea because I play dumb when they talk at me so they have to find a way to communicate in English.
I am only teaching secondary level classes and I am covering all of the ages from year 7 through to A-Level. It has been eye-opening observing the classes this week as it is definitely a different environment to what I have seen in the UK. The class sizes are much bigger and the students do not stop talking which will definitely be a challenge, but at the same time I hope to be able to (try) and channel their energy into some good English practice.
I have already been asked to take some lessons which felt a little bit like jumping in at the deep end but now I am happy to have started. I am still a little confused as to where each class is up to and the type of content I should plan but I guess that was to be expected in the first week. The teachers are just so happy to have a native speaker in the class they are giving me loads of freedom with what I do so I am going to try and be as creative as I can both for the sake of the class and to also build up a bank of ideas for the future.
Off to a good start though I would say :)
